Dog Birthday Photo Shoot for Stevie the Doodle in New Albany Ohio by Holly Hildreth

Dog wearing a birthday bandanna during her birthday photo shoot with a professional dog photographer in New Albany, Ohio

The Rumors are true, Stevie Nicks totally rocked her recent birthday photo shoot. Her sunny Don’t Stop (feeding me peanut butter) disposition made her the stuff of Dreams to photograph. This Gold Dust Woman was once a shy puppy mill castaway, but she wants you to know that she's Never Going Back, because sometimes in life you gotta Go Your Own Way. Now Stevie's thrilled to be living life off The Chain ( how many Fleetwood Mac references can I cram in one post?

Stevie’s owner wanted to do a photo shoot to celebrate her dog’s birthday. After not having the best start in life, this rescue dog is now living her best life, which includes being spoiled with a photo shoot!

For this session we used Rose Run Park in New Albany, Ohio. The roses were in full bloom, which made for a beautiful setting. All those roses give a few of the photos an Alice in Wonderland garden vibe!

While this photo shoot was supposed to be just of Stevie, I snuck a photo of Stevie and her mom together having a sweet moment in the garden.

Besides photographing in the rose garden, we also took a walk on the path through the woods. This gave us a great opportunity to get some different backgrounds so that it almost looks like the sessions was in 2 different parks!

As we walked through the wooded area of the park, I took advantage of a tree stump. I had Stevie perched on top of the stump, and then I got down low and used a wide angle lens to get the blue sky and dog in the same shot.

Afterwords we circled back toward the New Albany library garden and caught the tail end of golden hour there. I love that we didn’t have to go far to get so many different “looks” from this park.

But, regardless of where you have your dog’s photo shoot, the main thing is capturing your pup’s spirit and unique personality and the million little things that make them who they are.

Celebrating your dog’s birthday with a photo shoot is a fun and unique gift for you both. Hiring a professional pet photographer adds a special touch to the celebration. Capturing the Heartwarming Bond Between Ohio’s Dogs and Their People

A woman in her mid 30's embracing her golden retriever dog during a professional pet and owner photo shoot in Columbus, ohio

Ellie the Golden Retriever and Harrison the Doodle mix made for quite the dynamic doggy duo at their photo shoot. Ellie's total happy-go-lucky goofball personality perfectly complemented Harrison's super chill Bob Ross vibes. It was a joy to witness and capture the unique bond these two dogs share with each other and their adoring pet parents during our pet and family photography session.

This couple wanted to make sure we captured their dog’s personalities with this photo shoot. I think it’s safe to say that Ellie and Harrison's souls shine through in every shot. Between Ellie’s joyful leaps and silly expressions, and Harrison’s calm and collected demeanor, we got a ton of gorgeous images. Their owners were equally wonderful to work with, and it was a pleasure to be a part of capturing the love and joy they share.

If your dog is your ride-or-die, then including them in your family pictures is a no-brainer. They’re a much-loved family member! Your session is your chance to celebrate and forever freeze those fleeting moments of affection, joy, and companionship.

As Columbus, Ohio’s best pet photographer, I specialize in capturing the special connections between pets and their people. Just as every dog is different, so is every photo shoot! Custom pet photography means I tailor your shoot specifically to you and your dog. Before your session we will chat about the type of images you’re looking for, your dog’s individual needs, abilities, personality and quirks. We’ll also discuss the locations we could use for our shoot as well as see if there is any special occasion you’re celebrating. Whether you’re marking a happy milestone like your dog’s birthday, celebrating the adoption of a new puppy, or simply wanting to capture the daily happiness your dog brings into your life, a professional pet photo shoot is the perfect way to do so. This couple wanted to celebrate their wedding anniversary with a fun summer photo shoot together with their furry friends. They wanted to to tell the story of their little family as well as create some dramatically-lit colorful portraits to turn into canvas print wall art for their new home.

Since your session is tailored to you, if there’s something special you’d like to capture (like a cute trick, or your dog playing with their favorite toy), let me know! There are lots of fun and unique ways to incorporate these little details into your shoot in order to truly make your photos unique.

Not only will we capture the natural beauty of your dog by themselves, but I’ll document the bond you share as well. During your session, we will have plenty of opportunities to capture candid moments as well. I love being able to freeze these sweet, quiet moments of owners together with their dogs forever. Beautiful candid shots are a great representing of your relationship and the depth of your bond. Often these unscripted scenes end up being the owner’s favorite, as they tend to really show genuine emotions and don’t feel “stuffy” or posed like traditional family photos that you would get from a people-photographer (rather than a professional pet photographer).

Whether you’re in Westerville, Dublin, German Village, or anywhere else in the Columbus area, there are plenty of beautiful locations for a dog and owner photo shoot. We chose New Albany’s Rose Run Park for this portrait session location because we wanted to get a beautiful blend of natural scenes like the woods and the stream with some more man-made features like the brick bridge over the water. This picturesque location, with its lush greenery and serene atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for an evening of tail-wags and belly laughs.

A quiet moment of dog and owners together during a photoshoot at Newark, Ohio’s Dawe’s Arboretum

Your engagement photos should reflect your love story and the excitement of this new chapter together. Since your dog is a key part of your story, including them in your engagement photos just makes sense! It adds a layer of warmth and authenticity that’s hard to replicate, making the photos uniquely you.

An engaged couple and their dog sitting on a bridge over a lake at Dawes Arboretum in Newark, Ohio. The lighting is dramatic with dark blue sky and vibrant colors, which is the signature style of professional dog photographer Holly Hildreth

One reason why your dog should be in your engagement pictures is because they make the experience so much more fun! There is much less pressure on you when your dog is involved, as dogs have a way of bringing out the most authentic emotions in us. These unscripted moments lead to amazing candid photos that show genuine smiles and expressions.

During this photo shoot, scruffy little Mason here made sure both his dog-parents were having a good time while we shot. He was a little clown and would sneak in to steal puppy kisses. This always ended up in all of us laughing at his goofy antics. My favorite face licking photo is below of Mason and his mom together surrounded by wildflowers.

Portrait of a dog and owner. The woman is smiling and laughing as her scruffy dog licks her face. She is laying in a field of wildflowers in front of a lake during a dog photo shoot at Dawe's Arboretum in Newark, Ohio.

One important factor in making your engagement photos truly special is to incorporate a location that you, your partner, and your dog all enjoy. For this session the couple chose to be photographed at the amazingly beautiful Dawe’s Arboretum in Newark, Ohio. There were so many gorgeous spots to photograph in this park, but we spent a majority of our session shooting around the Japanese garden area. It was super hot, so the large shade trees of the garden gave us some relief from the scorching summer sun.

This was my first time visiting Dawe’s Arboretum, and I loved how dog-friendly it is! Most botanical garden type parks in the Columbus area do not allow dogs. So it was a nice breath of fresh air to discover that Dawe’s encourages people to visit with their dogs. I know I’m excited to go back with my own dogs soon!

In the end, your engagement photos will not only document this big life milestone, but also capture the love and joy that your dog brings into your life. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate your love story, one that includes all the members of your family—furry ones included.

Columbus End of Life Pet Photography - German Village's Abby the Boston Terrier by Holly Hildreth

A woman kisses her dog on the cheek during and end of life pet photography session at her home in the German Village area of Columbus, Ohio.

End of Life sessions are never easy, but this one definitely tugged at my heart strings--even now as I write this I am fighting the tears welling up in my eyes. I have a very special connection to this beautiful Boston Terrier; 6 years ago Abby was my foster dog through RESCUEDohio!! Abby had a rough start in life. She was failed by her previous humans, and came into the rescue as just skin and bones. She needed a little TLC to get back on her feet, but she had tons of love to give and a sunny disposition, which made it easy for anyone to fall in love with her. I did a little photo shoot with her in my studio to help her get adopted (the purple background photo below is from that shoot), and it worked!

Studio Portrait of a Boston Terrier dog doing a head tilt and looking at the camera against a purple background, by dog photographer Holly Hildreth

A wonderful family adopted Abby into their home and gave her an amazing life. So when I recently received a message from her adopter saying Abby's health was rapidly failing, I knew I had to get there quickly to make sure we captured a few last memories for her family before she passes. We wanted to make ensure Abby was comfortable during our session, so we did our photos in the back yard of her home in the beautiful German Village area of Columbus.

An old Boston terrier dog in a patch of Ivy during an end of life pet photography session in German Village, ohio.

I couldn’t believe how much more grey fur Abbey had compared to the last time I saw her! She almost looked like a different dog (especially when you compare this photo to the purple one!) But all that frosty grey hair is just a happy reminder of the many beautiful memories she’s made over the years with her loving family.

Abby’s aggressive brain tumor meant that she was no longer able to run and play, so we made sure her photo shoot was nice and relaxing. We let her lounge in the sun in her favorite chair while being fed treats, and watched as she sniffed in the German Village ivy before she decided on the perfect spot to lay down for a nap in the shade of an old oak tree.

Saying goodbye to a faithful friend is never easy—whether you’ve had 5 years together or 15, it still hurts to lose a much-loved pet. I'll be keeping Abby and her family in my thoughts as they make the most of their remaining time together.

An old Boston Terrier dog looking up while standing in some German Village Ivy during her End of Life Pet Photography Session in Ohio

And to Abby: my little “Spaghetti Frog”, I'm honored to have been able to help such a wonderful pup on their journey. You can run free knowing you've brought a lot of joy to the people who were lucky enough to have you in their lives.

Choosing the right Professional Pet Photographer in Columbus, Ohio, for your Dog’s End of Life Photo Shoot

When selecting an end of pet photographer it’s important to find someone who is not only highly skilled in pet photography, but also someone who is compassionate and understanding of the very sensitive nature of the session. As a professional pet photographer, I specialize in creating a personalized, dignified, and respectful experience for you and your dog during this difficult time. My goal is to help you celebrate your pet’s life with images that capture and preserve your dog’s memory forever, as well as provide you one last opportunity to make a few more special memories together they pass.

Why Your Maternity Photos Should Include Your Dog | Columbus, Ohio Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

A pregnant woman holds her baby bump and pets her dog's head during a maternity photoshoot including her dog in Columbus, Ohio.

If you’re looking to have maternity photos done, your first thought is probably not, “I should contact a local pet photographer!” While naturally the focus of a traditional maternity photo shoot is solely on the mom-to-be, there’s another important family member who deserves to be part of the experience: your dog! And no other photographer will be able to capture the incredible bond you and your dog share better than a professional pet photographer.

Your dog has been by your side through all the ups, downs, and big moments in your life. If your dog is your ride-of-die, then you will definitely want to include them in your photo shoot to add a unique and meaningful touch—after all, you were a dog mom first!

While many portrait, family, and maternity photographers are skilled in capturing beautiful moments between people, a pet photographer brings unique expertise that can make all the difference when your dog is involved.

Professional pet photography by Holly Hildreth featuring a happy Rottweiler dog by a bridge and creek in New Albany, Ohio.

Professional animal photographers are familiar with capturing both the human and animal dynamic. They know how to direct and pose you, your partner, and your dog together in ways that look and feel natural. They’re incredibly skilled at timing those shots to capture the split-second moments that a people-photographer may miss. They also know how to get your dog’s attention and how to get them to look in the right direction, whereas a people-only photographer may just be focused in on with how you look, which means your dog ends up being more of an after-thought.

While a traditional people and family photographer may have a whole list of pre-decided poses for you to do during your session (that they likely use for most sessions), going with the flow during your session and letting your dog set the pace allows us to have a much more casual, low-pressure experience, which in turn lets us capture beautiful candid moments. I aim to make your session as stress-free and fun for everyone as possible. I mean, pregnancy is already stressful as it is—there’s no need add more to your plate! So rather than feeling like a formal and serious photo shoot, your session will feel more like you are just enjoying some time together with your furry friend at one of the many beautiful parks in central Ohio.

Beautiful moment of a pregnant woman holding her baby bump while her dog reaches up to place a paw on her belly during a pet photo shoot in Ohio.

One of the key reasons to hire a pet photographer for a maternity photo shoot with your dog is their understanding of animal behavior. While your dog might be a perfect angel at home, animals can be unpredictable, especially in new places or around unfamiliar people, sights, smells, and sounds. A pet photographer knows how to work with your dog in order to create a safe and relaxed environment to put them (and you) at ease. They’re skilled at capturing your dog’s unique quirks and personality, whether that’s through playful moments, tender interactions, or loving gazes.

Are you’re looking for some cute dog-themed nursery decor? We can also capture some photos of your dog by themselves, which makes for great canvas prints and wall art which is a creative way to incorporate meaningful decor in your baby’s nursery. Photos of your dog can also make great wall art for other areas of your home, so it’s almost like you are really getting a two-for-one!

Dogs also bring a sense of joy, spontaneity, and fun that can lighten the mood during a photo shoot and help you relax in front of the camera. Whether they’re interacting with you, being cheeky, or simply snuggling up, the natural moments they create let me capture genuine emotions that may be harder to capture with just people alone. These candid shots are client favorites, and they often make the most memorable photos that reflect the authentic dynamics of your family, complete with real smiles and natural expressions.

So, if you’re looking to include your dog in your maternity photo shoot, then a professional dog photographer should be your first stop. Not only will you get gorgeous images of you and your dog together, but your whole experience is sure to be a stress-free, fun-filled outing with lots of laughs and big smiles.

Columbus Pet and Family Photo Shoot - Logan the Frenchie by Holly Hildreth

Dog and Owner Photo Shoot in Columbus, Ohio | © Holly Hildreth Photography

Logan, the silliest French Bulldog of them all, was a joy to photograph during his recent pet and family session. This super friendly pup is very loved by his family, and holds a special place in the heart of his dog-dad. Logan and his dad made the big move to Columbus, Ohio, from Puerto Rico and went through the difficult transition of starting anew so far from home. Logan played an important role in keeping his dad's spirits up by providing lots of love, laughs, and company during an otherwise stressful time. I can definitely relate. When I moved across the country to Columbus back in 2012, I knew absolutely no one here and only had my corgi by my side, so I completely understand how important our furry friends are in helping us get through the challenging seasons of life.

We did our photo shoot at Creekside Park in Gahanna, Ohio. We wanted to have a good mix of urban scenes as well as some natural backgrounds to give us lots of variety. I love using this park, as you don’t have to walk far to get lots of different looks during a session.

As it turns out, it doesn’t matter what the background or location it—Logan is going to do his best to give face licking kisses wherever he goes. This goofy boy and his inability to hold his licker let me get beautiful portraits of him with his family with genuine smiles and laughter, and helped keep the session fun and lighthearted.

Logan’s people also wanted to be sure we captured a shot of him wearing his Superman costume complete with a big red cape. This was such a fun shot—I love when we get to do unique and personality-filled photos like this. To get this shot I placed Logan on a large rock and then I laid down on the ground and aimed my camera up. This allowed me to get a great larger-than-life shot of Logan proudly showing off his costume while his cape billowed in the wind.

Incorporating special items into your pet photo shoot is a great way to make photos more meaningful and memorable—whether it’s a costume, special collar, favorite toy, or their favorite treat.

Arrow's Dog and Family Photo Shoot by Midwest Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

As a professional pet photographer, I always love having sunny weather for a session, But, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. For Arrow's Family and Pet photo shoot, her plans included torrential downpours! But the silver lining to the gathering storm clouds is that it made for some really dramatic skies and lighting, which allowed us to take incredibly unique family photos. The impressive thunderstorm that provided us with such a great background for our session ended up drenching us on our way back to the parking lot at the end of the shoot. (Still worth it!)

A couple poses with their dog during a couple's pet and family photo shoot in Ohio. There is a field and a dramatic stormy sky in the background

We began our outdoor pet photography session in a shallow creek area at Alexandria, Ohio’s best hidden gem: Lobdell Reserve. The cloudy skies allowed us to get nice, soft lighting while we were photographing by the stream. This is proof that cloudy days can still give you amazing results for your dog and owner portraits!

Arrow loves to wade in water, so this was the perfect session location for him. It’s always so fun to incorporate some of your dog’s favorite activities to really help capture the essence of your dog. Plus you can’t help but smile watching your dog having a blast in their element.

After our playful romp in the creek, we took a little break to go back up on the edge of the woods where we found a nice little bench to take a moment to catch our breath before moving on to another spot.

Next we headed over to a hiking trail through a tall prairie grass field. This spot gave us an unobstructed view of the sky and allowed us to get some shots with the approaching storm in the background. We tried to work quickly to get our portraits done before the storm got too close, but we were really cutting it close. You can even see some raindrops in a few of these photos if you zoom in. While most people think of family portraits they envision a clear blue skies, but I vote for making stormy sky portraits a thing! I grew up in Tornado Alley, and nothing reminds me of home quite like watching a storm build up in the distance. While we don’t get nearly as many storms here in central Ohio, every now and again we do get a pop up storm that puts on a show.

11 Poses for Dog and Owner Photo Shoots | Rock your Next Session with These Professional Pet Photography Tips by Holly Hildreth

Are you nervous about being in front of the camera during a pet and owner photo shoot with your dog? Or maybe you’re a professional pet photographer who’s looking to add more variety to their sessions. While every dog and every session is different, here are some tried and true poses, ideas, and prompts that have been client favorites for capturing natural, genuine expressions resulting in stunning portraits with your dog.

1.) Puppy Kisses

A hound dog licks his owners face during a pet and person photo shoot in Columbus, Ohio

This pose is an instant favorite for most dog owners. Not only can I capture the love and unique bond you share with your dog, but it always ends up with real smiles and laughter.

Pet photographer’s pro-tip: Want to do this shot but your dog is not a “kisser”? Try putting a tiny little dab of spray cheese on your cheek. Works like a charm to get your dog to lick your face.

2.) Returning the Favor

Woman kisses the top of her dog's head during an end of life pet photography session in December.

A family loves on their dog during an end of life Pet Photography session in the winter in Gahanna, Ohio

If you get a photo of your dog giving you a kiss, then it’s only right to return the favor! This posing prompt gives us a great opportunity to capture meaningful, candid-feeling shots.

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: I find kissing the top of the dog’s head or their cheek lets me get a clear view of both faces. Kissing the top of the dog’s head (where the hair is shortest) is critical for fluffy dogs whose long hair would otherwise hide the owner’s face.

3.) Follow Me

A jack russell terrier dog walking alongside his owner on a gravel road during an end of life pet photography session in Ohio

Capture the loyalty your pup has to you and your family with this pose. You can include faces or shoot tight like this photo so you only see legs, so it is great for those who many be a little camera shy. With shots like this you don’t have to worry about smiling or posing a certain way, you just walk with your dog and talk do them as you go so they look up at you. Easy!

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: This simple pose is a great opener to start your session, as it helps get the dog acclimated to the camera from a distance while they’re focused on their owner. It also is a fun way to burn off a puppy’s over-excitement (excellent for high energy dogs). This is also a good option for shy dogs who need a second to warm up, as you can shoot from a distance while the dog is focused on the owner.

4.) Spot’s Favorite Spot

A woman smiles while she scratches her dog. The Dog is so happy he is licking the air, during a dog and owner photo shoot in ohio

A woman laughs as her dog licks the air while she pets him during a dog and owner photo shoot.

Most dogs have a favorite spot for petting. Whether it’s belly rubs, back scratches, or head pats, this “pose” shows your dog’s quirks and personality, and also invariably brings a genuine smile to your face as you watch your pup lean into you for more pats.

Pet Photography Pro-Tip: This is a great ice breaker, as it often gets the owner smiling and laughing and helps both the dog and the owner to relax. This can also be a great “break” activity for when the dog needs to take a second away from posing for a mental break. This helps get them reset between other poses and keeps them relaxed.

5.) Cuddle Time

Woman and dog Posing for pet and family photo shoot. The hispanic woman embraces her mixed breed dog against an autumn background in Westerville, Ohio

A candid moment of a woman hugging her dog during a pet and owner photo shoot in the fall in Ohio.

If your dog is happy to have a quick snuggle, then this pose is a must-do. For small dogs you can hold them in your arms. For larger dogs crouch down down to their level so you’re both the same height and put your arm around them.

Pet Photography Pro-Tip: Not all dogs tolerate being hugged or snuggled and would prefer to have some space, so if you’re dog is not into it, do NOT to force it.

6.) Over the Shoulder

Pose idea for a dog and owner photo shoot with a man holding his French Bulldog that’s looking over his shoulder

The “Over the Shoulder” is another great pose for people who may be a little camera shy. It is flattering for both men and women, and works against pretty much any background. If the dog is small enough, you can hold them in your arms and then turn your back to the camera.

Pet Photographer Pro-Tip: If the dog is too big to be picked up, you can have the owners sit next to their pup with their backs to the camera to get a full body shot like in the photo below.

7.) It’s the Little Things

Pet photo shoot pose idea: woman holding her dog's paw during an end of life pet photography session

Doggy detail shots are a must have, particularly for End of Life Pet photography sessions. Everyone has something they love about their dog, whether it’s the special pattern of their fur, or their cute little paws, or the way their tail curls over their back—capturing these small details really helps celebrate and preserve their unique traits.

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: These shots don’t have to just be close-ups of physical feature. There are more creative ways to emphasize these things in your images. For example: let’s say the owner loves their dog’s fluffy tail. While you could just take a photo of the tail, you can also capture it creatively by getting a shot of the dog and owner walking away from the camera so you can get a two-for-one—you’ve got a nice candid moment of them walking together, PLUS it shows off the dog’s tail.

8.) Get on my Level

Cute mixed breed dog licks his owner's face while she lays in a field of wildflowers during a dog and owner photo shoot in Newark, Ohio during an engagement shoot.

Dog and owner photoshoot posing idea showing a woman laying in the grass and laughing as her dog licks her face.

During sessions, you’re likely to find me laying on the ground while I shoot…so why don’t you come join me? It’s super important for me to get down to the dog’s eye level when shooting as this helps highlight your pet in the most flattering way. Laying in the grass with your pet allows you to both be on the same level, as equals. Being close together is relaxing for you both, and allows us to capture sweet candid moments.

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: Have the dog’s owner talk to them and love on them while they’re on the ground together. That way you can get great eye contact between your two subjects, like in the shot below.

9.) Lap Dog

A man laughs as his large saint bernard dog sits on his lap during a family photo shoot with dogs

Saint Bernard dog sitting in his owner’s lap during a dog and owner photo shoot in Columbus

Most people think this pose is only for small dogs, but guess again! This is a fun one to do, as you also get an opportunity to get beautiful candid shots of you and your dog. This is an easy-to-do pose for both men and women. Be sure to give your pup lots of pets to keep them comfortable while they’re in your lap

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: If the dog is uninterested in being in the owner’s lap, have the owner kneel down directly behind the dog instead for this shot.

10.) The Look Back

A young couple petting their dog during an engagement session. The dog is looking back at the camera and smiling. The couple is in a Japanese garden in Ohio.

This one is especially perfect for dogs with a cheeky personality! Crouch down on the ground and talk to your pet, and I’ll capture your dog looking back at me.

Pet Photographer’s Pro-tip: To pull this one off, grab a unique-sounding noise maker that you have not used at all yet during the session. Save it specifically for this shot. While the dog has his back to the camera and is looking at his people use the novel noise maker and the dog will whip his head around quickly to figure out what that sound is. Since this moment only lasts a split second you better have a fast trigger finger in order to capture this one! You may only get one shot at this pose, because once the dog hears the weird noise maker a couple times he will no longer care enough to turn and look, so it’s best to get it on the first try.

11.) Well, Would ya’ Look at That

A woman smiles at her shepherd mix dog during a pet and owner photoshoot in Ohio. The location is a field in the summer, and there is a thunderstorm rolling in.

This one is super simple Just look at your dog! This super versitile pose can be done anywhere and you can be standing, walking, kneeling, or sitting—doesn’t matter. We can photograph this as a full-body or close up shot. This is also a very easy-to-do, flattering pose for both men and women of all ages.

Pet Photographer’s Pro-Tip: This “pose” is the gift that keeps on giving, as it that allows you to get several different-looking shots from the same prompt. Try playing around with this one by shooting a variety of angles and lenses. I prefer to do these kind of shots with a telephoto or prime lens (though I do love a good wide angle that allows me to incorporate more of the surrounding environment like the shot below).

Ohio Puppy Photography - Winnie the Golden by Holly Hildreth

Golden Retriever puppy by a stream in New Albany, Ohio, during a professional pet photography session

One frequently asked question I get is “Can you photograph young puppies?” Clients worry that their new wiggly ball of fluff won’t sit still long enough to have their picture taken. But here’s the secret: they don’t have to! With puppy sessions we will go with the flow and make sure it’s a fun and stress-free experience for your puppy. They may even blissfully fall asleep at the end of our shoot like 8 week old Winnie the golden retriever puppy here.

Professional pet photography session of an 8 week old Golden Retriever puppy in flower garden at Rose Run Park in New Albany, Ohio

Your pup's adorable antics and charm deserve to be preserved forever. Puppies grow up so fast! That's why investing in professional pet photography while your new pet is still a young puppy is a great choice.

Professional pet photographers specialize in capturing the unique personality and quirks of your puppy. They know how to bring out the best in their subjects, whether it's their playful spirit, curious nature, or heart-melting puppy dog eyes.

Puppies can be super wiggly at this age, so keeping them on leash is always a good idea. I will photoshop the leash out after our session so it looks like your sweet little fluff ball was running free, when in reality she is safe and leashed the whole time. That means there’s one less thing to worry about during your session!

Plus, the experience of a professional pet photoshoot is enjoyable for both you and your puppy. It's a chance to bond, create lasting memories, and have fun capturing moments that reflect the joy your puppy brings to your life.

3 Samoyed Session - Ohio Commercial Pet Photography by Holly Hildreth

3 white Samoyed dogs in a field of wildflowers at a pet photography session in Columbus, Ohio

What’s better than one fluffy polar bear-looking dog? How about 3? I had the pleasure of working with these 3 Samoyeds during a professional pet photography session at Rocky Fork Metro Park in New Albany. During our shoot we took advantage of the blooming wildflowers in the park, which made for a spectacular background.

Besides photographing people’s personal pets, I also offer commercial pet photography services. I photographed these 3 dogs for a commercial client that needed high-quality photos of Samoyed dogs for a product they are making. Through a model call I was able to connect with the owners of these 3 beautiful babies, who rocked their session.

The Importance of Professional Animal Photography for Pet Brands

In today's visually-driven world, the impact of high-quality, compelling imagery cannot be overstated. Whether you're selling pet products or you own a pet service business, photography plays a vital role in conveying your message to potential clients effectively.

In such a competitive market, trust, quality, and credibility are key differentiators. Custom commercial pet photography helps establish a polished and professional image for your brand, making potential customers more likely to trust your products or services. Research shows that 60% of consumers are more likely to contact a business that has high-end professional photos on their website and social media. Additionally, 90% of online shoppers say high-quality images are the most important factor when considering a purchase. As a result, not having these kinds of photos could be a deal-breaker for your clients, which in turn costs you business. Whether it's a soft and cozy pet bed, tasty homemade dog treats, or stylish pet accessories, professional photography ensures that every detail is presented in the best possible light (literally).

Commercial pet photography is not just about taking pictures; it's about telling your story, piquing your audience’s interest, and building a strong brand presence. For pet brands, investing in professional photography is an investment in your brand's success. So, whether you're launching a new product line or are looking to refine your pet-centric lifestyle brand, professional photography is your gateway to making a lasting impression. Meet Remedy

The #1 Female Briard in the US

One thing I love about my job is getting to meet and photograph rare dog breeds. This majestic muppet is Remedy. Remedy is a Briard--and not just any Briard...she's rocking the dog show world as the #1 female Briard in the country!

Most people have likely never heard of the Briard dog breed before. These French herding dogs have quite the unique appearance with luscious locks for days (is it wrong to be jealous of a dog's hair?) Briards are intelligent, active dogs who have captured the hearts of many, including Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon!

Beautiful Briard

For this session, Remedy’s owner wanted to take some photos of her to use in a dog show advertising magazine to celebrate her successful championship. She wanted to do a two-page spread so we needed to make sure there was enough empty space in the photo to cover the centerfold and binding. Check out the final ad used in the magazine below.

Dog Dads: Happy Paw-ther's Day from Columbus, Ohio pet photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

Happy Father’s Day, Dog Dads!

Father’s Day is a time to honor not just human dads, but also those who have taken on the role of dog dads. To all the pet owners out there whose hearts are filled with love for their canine companions, today is for you!

A man playing with his dog during a pet and family photography session in Ohio

But being a dog dad isn’t just about walks in the park or playtime in the backyard. It’s about the countless moments of joy, laughter, and even the occasional mischief that comes with having a furry friend by your side. It’s about the early morning wake-up calls, the wagging tails that greet you at the door, and the unconditional love that knows no bounds.

Whether you’ve raised your dog from a puppy or welcomed a rescue into your home, you understand the unique bond that develops between a dog and their human, a bond built on trust, companionship, and shared experiences. For those who want to capture these sweet moments forever, consider getting the dog dad in your life a pet and owner photo session.

I often work with couples who are wanting to do a pet and family session, but they warn me that the man in their life hates having his photo taken or will feel awkward/annoyed about being in front of the camera. But I assure you, it’s not going to feel like you’re having a photoshoot. Often the only professional photo shoot experiences guys have had are restricted to school pictures or wedding photos—both situations that are very formal shoots where you have to pose a certain way and smile at the camera. Instead during a pet and owner photo shoot, it’ll feel like you’re just hanging out with your dog in a nice park. You don’t have to “pose” or “act”, nor do you have to stare right at the camera and smile. Instead I will focus on documenting the natural moments and interactions between you and your dog. We can capture those genuine candid moments while you’re playing fetch, giving your dog a belly rub, walking through the park, or just hanging out in nature (or a dog-friendly bar if that’s more your speed!).

So, here’s to all the dog dads out there – may your day be filled with tail wags, puppy kisses, and moments that remind you why being a dog dad is truly something special. Happy Father’s Day to you and your beloved fur babies!

Ohio End of Life Pet Photography - Dog and Family Session | Woody the Jack Russell Terrier by Holly Hildreth

Saying goodbye to a faithful friend is never easy. I have had the pleasure of photographing Woody several times over the years. So when I heard he received a terminal diagnoses, we got him in immediately for one last photo shoot to celebrate his life. While he didn’t have a ton of energy, he was still happy to hang out in the warm sunshine and get lots of treats and pats. Woody and his family have had lots of adventures over their 15 years together, and I was honored to capture the incredible bond they share before he passes.

End of Life Pet Photography is such a special way to capture the incredible bond you share with your pet before they cross the Rainbow Bridge. Whether your pet has received a terminal diagnosis, or they are super seniors, I am able to provide you and your family a time and place to make a few last memories together with your dog that will be preserved forever. I tailor the session to your pet’s specific needs to ensure their comfort and safety is top priority. If you are in need of End of Life Pet Photography services in the Columbus, Ohio region, please contact me today. I am usually able to get most clients in for photo shoot within 48 hours.

Columbus Dog Photography - Pet Birthday Photo Shoot with Freyja and Max by Holly Hildreth

Freyja the Rough Collie and Max the German Shepherd recently had a professional pet photography session to celebrate Freyja’s 1st birthday in style! We captured some of the beautiful spring colors as well as some exciting birthday photos for Freyja’s doggy birthday party announcement. These two were so fun to work with, and they had a blast while getting their photos taken. Freyja even had her own party hat and birthday bandana.

Dog Birthday Party Photography - By Ohio's Premiere Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

I have a tradition of doing birthday photos every year of my own dogs on their birthday to celebrate. I try to make the theme different every year, and also use it as an opportunity to get a little creative! Today I wanted to share with you my youngest corgi Brisket’s birthday photos. Brisket turned 3 this year, and you may not know this, but he’s not actually a dog—he’s really 3 possums stacked on top of each other in a trench coat…inside a corgi’s body.

This year I went with a color explosion for the party theme. I wanted a vibrant color pallet, reminiscent of Lisa Frank’s style for my puppy’s 3rd birthday party.

Of course I can’t just share this year’s photos without also including his last 2 birthdays as well. For his 1st and 2nd birthdays, I wanted to go with something simple, since he was still very much a puppy and not interested in modeling for me. Now that he’s older he is obsessed with getting his picture taken.

Ohio Commercial Pet Photography Shoot - Beer Can Label for Columbus Brewery by Holly Hildreth

For the past few years, I have been fortunate to be a part of super a unique and popular fundraiser contest in support of RESCUEDohio, a Columbus, Ohio-based dog rescue organization I volunteer with. For this contest, people submitted pictures of their dogs and got friends and family to “vote” for them for the chance to be the new face of 3 Seventh Son Brewing beer cans! Each “vote” was a $1 donation to RescuedOhio. Through this contest we raised over $37.5k for RescuedOhio!!! These funds will go to helping provide medical treatment, housing and supplies, and adoption services to homeless, abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and puppies here in Central Ohio.

After the contest ended, I photographed the top 3 winning dogs for their beer label. I just love how these turned out. Take a look at how good Georgie, Winry, and Buddy look on the cans! We went with bold, primary colors, as they look super eye-catching when in a 6-pack.

To celebrate the release, Seventh Son Brewing threw a release party. To build excitement and get the word out, I did a photo shoot with the 4th place winner at the brewery. We used these photos across social media to help bring awareness to our campaign.

A Picture Perfect Puppy Party | Pet Birthday Photo Shoot by Professional Dog Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

Besides photographing other people’s dogs, I try to make a point of capturing my own two corgis, Rigby and Brisket. I have a yearly tradition of doing a small photo shoot to celebrate on their birthdays. Rigby recently turned a whopping 9 years old, so we had a photoshoot to celebrate!

Setting the Scene:

For Rigby’s 9th birthday, I wanted to go with a classic, sleek black and gold theme. I was going for a little bit of a Great Gatsby vibe. I transformed my studio with colorful gold streamers layered on top of a black velvet background and completed the scene with a golden “9” balloon and glittery party hats.

More Than Just Snaps: Memories Made

By the end of the shoot, I had a camera roll full of hilarious and heartwarming photos that perfectly captured Rigby’s personality. Our session was a joyful celebration of the unconditional love our furry companions bring to our lives. So Happy Birthday, Rigby! I am looking forward to many more years together still to come.

If you want to celebrate your dog’s birthday in style, then ditch the grainy phone pics and create lasting memories with a professional pet photoshoot. Trust me, you won't regret it!

Georgie here has a big announcement: His Humans are Getting Married!

I photographed Pam, Devon, and Georgie a few years ago for a pet and family session, so I was excited for the opportunity to work with them again for their engagement photos. For their photo shoot, they wanted to be sure to include Georgie, their rescue dog. We also wanted the images to have a warm and relaxed vibe, as well as incorporate their favorite drinks as a special touch.

Since it was the middle of winter and ridiculously cold outside, we had to get creative. We beat the chilly weather by photographing at The Junto Hotel! This dog-friendly hotel in downtown Columbus is incredibly beautiful and made for the perfect backdrop for our session. It also gave us an excellent view of the skyline.

While I’m a pet photographer first and foremost, it’s always a special treat to be able to capture pets with their people—especially when celebrating some of life’s big milestones! Your dog isn't just a pet, they're family. So, when it comes to capturing the joy of your engagement, include them in the celebration! Here's why your furry friend deserves a spot in your engagement shoot:

  • Furever Part of the Story: Your engagement photos tell the story of your love, and your dog has likely been there for some of the most special moments in your relationship. Including them reflects the true essence of your growing family.

  • Laughter & Lightheartedness: Dogs are natural stress relievers and bring a sense of fun to any situation. Their playful energy can inject humor into your photos and help you relax in front of the camera.

  • Unique & Unforgettable: Engagement photos including your dog are guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind, truly special photos that capture not just the bond between you and your partner, but the incredible love you all share.

Ohio End of Life Dog Photographer - Lincoln’s Pet and Family session by Holly Hildreth

Woman saying goodbye to her dog, a golden doodle, during and end of life pet photography session in New Albany, Ohio

“Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.” – -Agnes Sligh Turnbull

I recently had an End of Life session with this adorable doodle named Lincoln, and his sister Maizey. Lincoln was such a gentle and sweet boy, taking treats with the best manners, sitting patiently for photos despite Ohio’s winter temperatures, and happily accepting pets from anyone who would give them. I'm so glad we decided to brave the cold and give Lincoln one last tail-wagging adventure, as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge just a couple hours after our session. Please join me in sending some love to Lincoln's family during this difficult time.

Valentine's Day Themed Dog Photoshoot by Ohio Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

Adorable Valentine’s Day Puppy Portraits

A big round of a-paws for Rigby and Brisket being the best doggy models

While I’m not a huge fan of Valentine’s day, I decided that my two corgis needed a Valentine's-themed shoot anyway. I knew I wanted to try something new, and decided to create my own background and set for this photo shoot. The inspiration came when I realized I needed to cut off and toss some seamless paper that got thoroughly scuffed up from use, but instead of just throwing it away, I had arts and crafts time! I cut hearts out of the used paper and taped them onto a clean roll of seamless with painter’s tape. The result was a super-festive, greeting-card worthy set of photos of my pups that you can’t help but smile about
