Capturing Rare Dog Breeds: A Hungarian Mudi Photo Shoot in Columbus, Ohio

One of the things I love most about being a professional pet photographer in Columbus, Ohio, is the incredible opportunity to meet and capture stunning images of some of the most unique and rare dog breeds in the world. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Ginko, a beautiful Hungarian Mudi! For those unfamiliar with the breed, the Hungarian Mudi is a truly remarkable dog. Originally bred as herding dogs in Hungary, they’re known for their intelligence, agility, and versatility. These energetic dogs are always eager to work and learn, excelling in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding competitions.

The Mudi’s striking appearance makes them a dream to photograph. Their coats can range from wavy to curly, and they come in a variety of colors, from solid black to unique merle patterns. While they may be relatively small in size, their big personalities (and even bigger voices) make them stand out. As a pet photographer, it’s an absolute joy to capture their playful and energetic spirit through my lens. Mudis are incredibly loyal, loving, and bond closely with their owners, which always shines through in their portraits.

What makes the Hungarian Mudi even more special is how rare they are—only about 450 of these incredible dogs are living in the United States. Each encounter with one feels like a special treat, and believe it or not, I’ve had the privilege of photographing several Mudis here in Columbus! I guess you could say I’m a Mudi magnet! Alexandria, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Spider the Mudi

When I saw the forecast was going to be a high of 24 degrees, I asked Spider’s owner if she wanted to reschedule for a warmer date. She decided to keep the original date and brave the cold, and I’m so glad she did! We got a little dusting of snow the night before, and the shallow creek we photographed at had turned to ice. It made for a beautiful location! I’ve been really wanting to do some more winter-looking shoots, and I got my wish! Spider was seriously such a treat to work with. He happily did all the poses I asked for, including climbing on logs, balancing on rocks, and more. We got so many great shots.

Gahanna, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Creekside with Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy and Tip

I met Ravasz the Hungarian Mudi several years ago for a photoshoot in Westerville, so I was super excited when his mom reached out again to schedule another session for him and his 3 furry siblings. It was a blast photographing Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy, and Tip. All four of these pups were super smart, happy little models who were willing to work for hot dogs. We had absolutely perfect weather for our shoot at Creekside in Gahanna and enjoyed exploring the park. Creekside is such a fun location for a shoot. It has so much to offer from cute little “Main Street USA” style storefronts, to fountains, to a boardwalk through the woods, following the creek. Plus, I can’t forget my favorite feature: a nice little waterfall!
Ravasz and his siblings are Hungarian Mudis and Mudi mixes. Have you ever met a Hungarian Mudi before? If so, you should count yourself lucky! There are only an estimated 450 in the United States and about 3,000-4,000 worldwide! Want to learn more about this unique, rare breed? As you can see, he is still just as handsome as ever, even after all these years.
