Dogs are such a special part of our lives. They provide us with unconditional love, companionship, and endless entertainment. A Professional Pet Photographer can help you to capture the deep connection you share, creating not just photographs, but masterful works of art featuring you and your dog.

Unlike people and family photographers that may also shoot weddings, graduations, newborns, etc, I ONLY take on sessions that include an animal. 1. Professional Pet Photographers are Experts at “Reading” Your Dog. Did you know the main way dogs communicate is through body language? A dog is always broadcasting what they’re feeling and what they need through tiny signals that most people don’t even notice. I am an expert at seeing and interpreting the subtle little signs your dog gives off, and in turn tailoring your session to what your dogs needs in order to create an enjoyable, stress-free experience for your pet. My goal is to always keep your pup safe, happy, and engaged in everything we’re doing.

2. During Your Session, Your Dog is the Boss. A professional dog photographer can adapt on the fly and roll with whatever your dog feels like doing. Your dog will never be pushed into stressful situations or forced to do anything they don’t want to do. I am continuously watching for signs that your dog needs to take a break—and we will take as many as your dog needs. Sometimes all it takes is 10 seconds of belly rubs to to hit the reset button in your dog’s brain to get them back to feeling confident, happy, and interested in getting their photo taken. Letting your dog set the pace and dictate the kind of shots we get in turn means that you and your dog will both have a positive experience. Your dog may even blissfully fall asleep smiling during your drive home from our session.

3. Pets are Family. Period. With some people-focused photographers, your dog can end up looking like just an accessory in your photos and not like an equally-important part of your family. Often times people photographers will relegate dogs to the very edge or bottom of the frame. The dogs may also look disengaged—the people are smiling at the camera, but the dog is way more interested in what’s happening behind him. We always hear from clients that they’re worried their dog won’t be suitable for a photo shoot as they don’t know any commands, are high energy, or have a short attention span. But, there’s no reason to worry. I have tons of tricks up my sleeve for getting your dog to look at me and stay engaged with what we’re doing. Clients are always genuinely shocked at how many great photos we get from a session. Knowing when to press the shutter button is key, as it really only takes a split second of attention to make your dog look like he was a perfectly-posed best-boy. Pet photographers are able to anticipate when your dog is about to be in the perfect position and have the best expression, and are masters at knowing when to take the shot.

Regular Family photographers that specialize in people portraits do not have an in-depth understanding of animal behavior—just like how you wouldn’t expect your primary care doctor to also be a veterinarian. I have hundreds of hours of positive-reinforcement dog training classes under my belt, and I also volunteer my photography services to 2 local rescues by photographing adoptable dogs. I’ve never met a dog that I couldn’t win over; sometimes it just takes a little extra patience for your dog to feel comfortable and come out of their shell. Ohio End of Life Pet Photography - Cosmo

Cosmo and his family recently came to me for an End of Life Pet Photography Session when he received the unfortunate news that his cancer had returned. It's always an honor to be trusted with capturing some final memories of pets and families together—documenting the love and deep bond that is shared. While none of us know how long our pups have with us, it is never easy to say goodbye. I'll be thinking of Cosmo and his family as they spend his golden days together. I'll leave you with my little poem about the most handsome one-eared wonder, Cosmo:

Columbus, Ohio, End of Life Pet Photography Session - Rocky

I recently had an End of Life session with sweet Rocky here. Rocky's family contacted me about a session when he got some devastating health news. Unfortunately I was in Florida at the time. We discussed checking in to other awesome pet photographers in the area who might be able to get Rocky in before I got back to Ohio, as time is of the essence when dealing with End of Life cases. But, Rocky is a determined guy! He held on until I got back to Columbus. I think he knew just how important these photos would be to his family. After having a rough night, Rocky did not have the strength to walk or sit/stand for more than a fleeting moment, but what he could do was stretch out and enjoy laying in the cool grass, watching his fur sibling, Minnie, explore the park, and soaking up all the snuggles and pats from the people who love him the most.

One concern I hear from owners considering End of Life pet photography is that they’re afraid their dog isn't suitable for a photo shoot due to being blind, deaf, or mobility or otherwise impaired. They worry that if their pet is not able to run and play, then the photos won't capture their pup's personality. I’m here to tell you that you have no reason to worry! Here is proof that we will absolutely capture wonderful memories of your faithful friend regardless of any impairments they may have.

Bexley, Ohio, Puppy Photo Session - Solitaire the Cocker Puppy

Isn't Solitaire just gorgeous?! This sweet, cuddly Cocker Spaniel puppy came to Stop the Suffering Animal Rescue of Ohio as a cast-off from a puppy mill. This poor baby had a bad heart, so her breeder planned to euthanize her instead of providing her with the PDA surgery she really needs to fix it. Luckily STS was able to rescue her and get her the medical attention she needs in order to have a normal, happy life. Solitaire was adopted and now lives with an amazing family who adores her. She has 4 children and 3 doggy siblings to play with, as well as a dream back yard to run around in. We took advantage of the incredible gardens at Solitaire’s new home for her session. There was such amazing spring color, gorgeous landscaping, and of course perfect golden hour light for our shoot. Solitaire was so much fun to photograph, and I’m wishing her all the best in this next chapter!

Westerville, Ohio, End of Life Pet Photography Session - Nellie

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

This is sweet senior face is Nellie. Her mom reached out to me for an End of Life photoshoot when Nellie's health began to sharply decline. Luckily I have the most amazing, understanding clients which allowed me to move some session around in order to get Nellie in the very next day for her shoot!

Nellie’s owner describes her more like a sister than a pet. They have made so many memories in their 16.5 years together. It was easy to see just how special their connection was. While Nellie’s health issues limited her mobility, that didn’t stop her from laying in the soft grass, sniffing the cool spring breeze, and enjoying watching the sunset with the ones she loves the most: her mom, and fur-sibling Patriot. I'm so glad we were able to get Nellie in for her session when we did, as 2 days later, she made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge. Run free, Miss Nellie! Until we meet again.

While we all want our furry family members to be by our sides forever, unfortunately at some point we all must say goodbye. Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Gunner & Jasmine

Meet Jasmine, Gunner, and their adoring pet parents! Jasmine was such a sweetheart, coming right up to me and demanding pets as soon as I arrived. Gunner wasn’t so sure about getting his photo taken, but with some treats and patience he came around!

We chose Everal Barn and Homestead in Westerville for our soot location, as we wanted a park that still had some late fall color and was also quiet. This tranquil park is one of my favorite spots for my shy dogs! There’s not much noise or other park-goers, and it’s big enough that I don’t need to be super close to a shy dog—I can give them lots of space by photograph them from a distance with a telephoto lens. That way the shy pup does not get stressed about a stranger being too close.

As with all sessions, I work at the dog’s pace. I want to make sure every photoshoot is fun for the dog and owners, so we’ll only do things your dog is comfortable with. Through my pet photography career, as well as my experience in training my own dogs for obedience and agility, I’ve learned how to read all the subtle cues and body language dogs give off when they’re feeling overwhelmed. During your session I am always watching your pup’s interactions and continually reading what they’re “saying” during the shoot. When I see your pup needs a break, we will pause to give them a minute to relax, get a drink of water, play with a toy, or get some belly rubs from their owners. Having that small moment to reset and focus on something positive always helps pups to regroup, and keeps the whole experience positive and happy for them.

Lewis Center, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Dove

Leaves, camera, action! You may recognize this gorgeous White Swiss shepherd as Dove the Diabetic Alert Dog in Training! I photographed Dove last year while she was still a puppy. It was great to see her again now that she’s all grown up. Not only is this dog gorgeous, but she’s got brains and athleticism too! Dove showed off her recall skills, frisbee catching, and diving/water retrieval prowess during her shoot. Even though it was a chilly day, Dove couldn't wait to jump into the water! We walked a beautiful trail at Alum Creek State Park down to the lake and back, stopping along the way for short play sessions against gorgeous fall colors.

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Buggy the Shar Pei mix

I admit, I absolutely LOVE fall! And whenever I see some gorgeous golden sunlight shining through colorful autumn leaves during a session, it's just perfection. Meet Buggy, the Shar Pei mix. Buggy takes doggy modeling very seriously and demanded to be paid in McDonald’s chicken nuggets. Obviously she got all the nuggets she wanted! I mean, how could anybody say "no" to that face?

Buggy has short black fur, which really stood out against the colorful fall leaves. One concern I hear a lot from clients is that they can’t seem to get a good picture of their black dog on their own at home. Often there’s no detail in the fur or the fur looks blue. I tell these owners that they’ve come to the right person, as I have extensive experience photographing black dogs of all shapes and sizes, and have been able to hone my lighting to really show off that gorgeous black fur that truly looks black.

Westerville, Ohio, Puppy Photography Session - Carmella the Mini-Bernadoodle

Meet Carmella, the 10 week old Mini-Bernadoodle. This insanely cute puppy was just as sweet as she looks—nothing but wiggles and kisses from this good girl. She was curious about everything during our session at Everal Barn and Heritage Park in Westerville, which made for a super fun shoot. I LOVE photographing puppies! With all their energy and excitement, it makes it easy to get lots of great personality shots. But you have to have a quick trigger finger, or else you’ll miss those fleeting moments of stillness!

One concern I hear quite often from prospective puppy clients is the worry that we won’t be able to get good pictures because their young puppy doesn’t know any commands, and also can’t be trusted off leash. But, what most folks don’t know, is that I keep the puppies on a leash the whole time. Yep, that’s right. In every photo here Carmella is actually wearing a collar and leash, and I Photoshop the leash out afterwords. That way there’s no worries about safety, and we can keep your pup close by. There’s also no need for these little ones to know any commands. Although it’s always nice to have a good “sit”, sometimes you get more exciting photos when you just let your pup play, explore their environment, and just be a puppy. Puppies have a very short attention span, so it’s important to make sure to keep the session light and fun. That way the experience is as stress-free as possible for both you and your puppy.

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Tyson the French Mastiff and Henry the French Bulldog

While driving to my shoot of Tyson, Henry, and their owners, the rain was coming down in buckets. Not a good sign! Thankfully when I arrived to the park, the rain tapered off. It was still cloudy, but at least it was dry, so we started to shoot. Somehow we ended up getting super lucky, and the gloomy clouds broke up just in time for some gorgeous sunset shots at the end of our session.

Tyson’s owner let me know when booking that she wanted to celebrate the time they have left with him by doing a photoshoot together. Knowing this, I wanted to be sure to catch a few extra shots of the special bond they had. Seeing just how much love all four of them had for each other made my job easy!

Gahanna, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Creekside with Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy and Tip

I met Ravasz the Hungarian Mudi several years ago for a photoshoot in Westerville, so I was super excited when his mom reached out again to schedule another session for him and his 3 furry siblings. It was a blast photographing Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy, and Tip. All four of these pups were super smart, happy little models who were willing to work for hot dogs. We had absolutely perfect weather for our shoot at Creekside in Gahanna and enjoyed exploring the park. Creekside is such a fun location for a shoot. It has so much to offer from cute little “Main Street USA” style storefronts, to fountains, to a boardwalk through the woods, following the creek. Plus, I can’t forget my favorite feature: a nice little waterfall!
Ravasz and his siblings are Hungarian Mudis and Mudi mixes. Have you ever met a Hungarian Mudi before? If so, you should count yourself lucky! There are only an estimated 450 in the United States and about 3,000-4,000 worldwide! Want to learn more about this unique, rare breed? Head over to the AKC’s website, to read about Mudis, and you might just spot a familiar face—Ravasz! That’s right; this handsome boy is literally the poster child for the breed. I’m including a screenshot of the AKC’s Mudi page below. This photo was from my first shoot with Ravasz years ago where we used Hoover Reservoir Lake in Westerville for our location. As you can see, he is still just as handsome as ever, even after all these years.

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Marnie and Murfey the Havanese Dogs

Marnie and her brother Murfey the Havanese dogs recently had their session at Everal Barn and Homestead at Heritage Park in Westerville. These two were absolute rockstars! Marnie had the sweetest smile, and Murfey might be in the running for "best head tilt ever". True to their breed, these two were smart, outgoing, silly little pups. So it's no surprise that historically, Havanese were once used as circus performers, due to their happy clown-like nature. I knew from the moment I met these two that the shoot was going to be amazing, and they did not disappoint!

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Denver and Kitsu, Brittanys

Denver and Kitsu the Brittanys are littermates that were adopted by two friends. They came to me for their outdoor sunset sessions at Hoover Reservoir in Westerville, Ohio. These two lively pups enjoyed exploring the forest and all the sights and smells of the park. While I always hope for perfect sunny skies for every session, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. Unfortunately the sun disappeared behind a cloud bank as soon as our session started and never really came back. But the good news was that it meant we could get some dramatic blue hour shots at the end of our session.
