Columbus End of Life Pet Photography - Dugan by Holly Hildreth

Handsome 13 year old Dugan recently came to me for an End of Life session when he was diagnosed with a sinus tumor. He was a tiny gentleman during this pet and family photo shoot and was nothing but happiness, tail wags, and love--at one point taking a quick break from shooting to run up to me and ask for a belly rub. It was very clear to see just how special Dugan is to his people. I’m so glad we were able to capture the bond he had with his moms while he was still feeling good. I'll be thinking of Dugan and his family as they treasure the remaining time they have together.

While End of Life Pet Photography sounds like a very somber occasion, owners often feel much more joyful and experience a sense of peace during these photo shoots. End of Life sessions give you a time and a place to make a few last beautiful memories together with your dog before they pass. Owners also find that having these images after their pet crosses the rainbow bridge helps bring them comfort an a sense of closure.

Newark, Ohio Puppy Photography Session at Highland Hills by Holly Hildreth

Two English Bulldog puppies in front of the Appalachian foothills of Newark, Ohio

All puppies are cute, but holy cow, English Bulldog puppies are in a league of their own!

I had the pleasure of photographing 8 rolly, polly English Bulldog puppies and their momma at the gorgeous Highland Hills Venue. These insanely cute puppies belong to the venue owner, so it was fitting to do the session there. I'm so glad we did, because the location is amazing!

Nestled in the Appalachian foothills outside of Newark, Ohio. Highland Hills Venue is a photographer's dream. They have a gorgeous wooden barn, outdoor string lights, a beautiful view of the surrounding hills, a pond with fountain, a vintage truck, longhorn and highland cows...and the list goes on! If you're looking for an event venue for a wedding, party, or just a place to photograph your next shoot, I highly recommend checking them out!

Westerville, Ohio, End of Life Pet Photography Session - Nymeria & Maks by Holly Hildreth

How adorable is this brother/sister duo?! We had beautiful weather for littermates Maks and Nymeria's photoshoot. Their owner reached out to me through The Tilly Project to schedule an End of Life session when Nymeria unfortunately received a terminal cancer diagnosis. Unsure of how much time she had left with us, we made certain to get her in ASAP for a photoshoot. Both of these pups were super sweet during their session, and Nymeria was acting so happy that you almost couldn't tell that this 13-year-old girl was so sick. I hope that she continues to be her happy self and enjoy all her favorite things in the time she has with loved ones.

The Tilly project connects families with photographers who specialize in end-of-life pet photography. The aim of these End of Life sessions is to provide families with portraits to remember their beloved pet after they are gone, as well as provide a way to process the grief of losing their furry friend.

In addition to providing end-of-life pet photography services, The Tilly Project also offers a variety of resources for families who are grieving the loss of a pet. The project's website includes a grief toolbox, a blog, and a forum where families can connect with each other and share their stories.

Columbus, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Lucy & Rosie by Holly Hildreth

Lucy and her recently adopted sister-from-another-mister, Rosie, were a delight to photograph. Lucy was so bubbly and eager to please. She just wanted to be in the spotlight! Rosie was a little hesitant, but soon learned that photos mean lots of treats! But...can we just take a minute to talk about the glow-up Rosie has had?!

Rosie had a tough start in life. She is a former puppy mill momma. She was stuck in a wire cage 24/7, with another cage on top of her. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the excrement from the dog above her would fall onto her, which is a horrible way to live! Luckily Stop the Suffering Animal Rescue of Ohio stepped in and got her out of there. Four months ago Rosie started her life over, and she has totally won the jackpot being adopted by an amazing, patient, loving family that adores her. Only happy days are ahead for this girl--and she deserves it!

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Gunner & Jasmine by Holly Hildreth

Meet Jasmine, Gunner, and their adoring pet parents! Jasmine was such a sweetheart, coming right up to me and demanding pets as soon as I arrived. Gunner wasn’t so sure about getting his photo taken, but with some treats and patience he came around!

We chose Everal Barn and Homestead in Westerville for our soot location, as we wanted a park that still had some late fall color and was also quiet. This tranquil park is one of my favorite spots for my shy dogs! There’s not much noise or other park-goers, and it’s big enough that I don’t need to be super close to a shy dog—I can give them lots of space by photograph them from a distance with a telephoto lens. That way the shy pup does not get stressed about a stranger being too close.

As with all sessions, I work at the dog’s pace. I want to make sure every photoshoot is fun for the dog and owners, so we’ll only do things your dog is comfortable with. Through my pet photography career, as well as my experience in training my own dogs for obedience and agility, I’ve learned how to read all the subtle cues and body language dogs give off when they’re feeling overwhelmed. During your session I am always watching your pup’s interactions and continually reading what they’re “saying” during the shoot. When I see your pup needs a break, we will pause to give them a minute to relax, get a drink of water, play with a toy, or get some belly rubs from their owners. Having that small moment to reset and focus on something positive always helps pups to regroup, and keeps the whole experience positive and happy for them.

Commercial Pet Photography Shoot in Central, Ohio - English Springer and Cocker Spaniels by Holly Hildreth

English Springer Spaniel photographed by Professional Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth during a session in Alexandria, Ohio

I always love commercial shoots, as they’re just so much fun to work on. For this particular project, the client was looking for glamorous and seasonal images of English Springer Spaniels in the great outdoors. Of course I instantly knew which location to use!

This secret spot is my absolute favorite spot in the fall. It’s a little hidden gem in the Appalachian foothills, just a short drive from Columbus. Every October the trees completely carpet this creek bed with leaves, which makes for an incredible scene set against towering shale cliffs. For me when I get to combine dramatic landscapes with gorgeous dogs in a shoot—it’s just ...*chef’s kiss*

I had the pleasure of photographing Kelce and 14 week-old Tate from Windmoor English Springer Spaniels. They brought along 2 beautiful English Cocker friends as well, so of course I snapped a few shots of them too! It’s hard to pick a favorite shot from this session, as they’re all just sublime!

Lewis Center, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Dove by Holly Hildreth

Leaves, camera, action! You may recognize this gorgeous White Swiss shepherd as Dove the Diabetic Alert Dog in Training! I photographed Dove last year while she was still a puppy. It was great to see her again now that she’s all grown up. Not only is this dog gorgeous, but she’s got brains and athleticism too! Dove showed off her recall skills, frisbee catching, and diving/water retrieval prowess during her shoot. Even though it was a chilly day, Dove couldn't wait to jump into the water!

During our pet photo shoot, we walked a beautiful trail at Alum Creek State Park in Lewis Center, Ohio, down to the lake and back, stopping along the way for short play sessions against gorgeous fall colors. We got so many beautiful images that it’s hard to choose a favorite!

New Albany, Ohio, Pet Photography Studio Session - Roux the Afghan Hound by Holly Hildreth

I've had an idea for a styled shoot rolling around in my head for ages. I pictured an elegant hound, wearing a gold crown, with moody lighting in a whole renaissance era oil-painting vibe. So when Roux's owner contacted me about booking a studio shoot for her gorgeous Afghan Hound, I knew this was the right pup to be my model. I asked her owner if she'd be ok with me getting some bonus shots after the regular shoot was done, and she agreed. So we did a normal shoot, and then switched into Rembrant mode to try to make this idea a reality. It's safe to say, Roux looks like she was born to wear a crown.

A few days after the shoot, I entered the image of Roux lying down with a laurel crown to the Professional Photographers of America’s annual International Print Competition (IPC). This image received a “merit” designation, which is awarded to high caliber images. This image joined 3 other of my photos which merited, to earn me a Bronze medal in the 2022 IPC competition.

Columbus, Ohio, Commercial Pet Photography - Parachute Home Puppy Party by Holly Hildreth

One of the things that has helped me develop my photographic style as a pet photographer, is my background in commercial photography! Any time I am able to combine commercial photography with pet photography? I’m in heaven. So when Parachute Home reached out and asked me if I would join them for their annual Puppy Party for National Dog Dog at their new Easton location, I was so excited! They asked me to photograph dogs with some of their products, like their canvas dog beds. We had a great turn out, and created some beautiful product photos featuring our puppy party guests.

Did you miss the party this year? Well the good news is that Parachute Home throws a party every year at each store location for National Dog Day where you can come shop with your best friend, enjoy some local treats and drinks, and get your very own FREE pet portrait! Hope to see you next year!

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Sunset Session - Bernard & Cookie by Holly Hildreth

Bernard’s owner reached out to me to take advantage of my July fundraiser for Stop the Suffering Animal Rescue of Ohio, where a portion of every session fee is donated to help homeless and neglected pets in central Ohio. Bernard had some unfortunate health news, and his owner wanted to get him in for a session while he was still happy and able to get around. Bernard’s sister-from-another-mister, Cookie, came along too for some photos. Their owner let me know that Cookie is shy and can be skittish in new and strange situations, so we made sure to budget extra time into their session to ensure Cookie was comfortable with everything, and worked to make the experience as stress-free as possible for her.

Our shoot day was…INSANELY HOT! But sometimes you just get crazy lucky during a shoot and not only get a stellar sunset, but a brilliant blue twilight complete with a few stars and fireflies! I may have been dripping sweat through Bernard and Cookie's session, but it was so worth it for results like these!

Gahanna, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Creekside with Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy and Tip by Holly Hildreth

I met Ravasz the Hungarian Mudi several years ago for a photoshoot in Westerville, so I was super excited when his mom reached out again to schedule another session for him and his 3 furry siblings. It was a blast photographing Ravasz, Oopsie, Dazy, and Tip. All four of these pups were super smart, happy little models who were willing to work for hot dogs. We had absolutely perfect weather for our shoot at Creekside in Gahanna and enjoyed exploring the park. Creekside is such a fun location for a shoot. It has so much to offer from cute little “Main Street USA” style storefronts, to fountains, to a boardwalk through the woods, following the creek. Plus, I can’t forget my favorite feature: a nice little waterfall!
Ravasz and his siblings are Hungarian Mudis and Mudi mixes. Have you ever met a Hungarian Mudi before? If so, you should count yourself lucky! There are only an estimated 450 in the United States and about 3,000-4,000 worldwide! Want to learn more about this unique, rare breed? Head over to the AKC’s website, to read about Mudis, and you might just spot a familiar face—Ravasz! That’s right; this handsome boy is literally the poster child for the breed. I’m including a screenshot of the AKC’s Mudi page below. This photo was from my first shoot with Ravasz years ago where we used Hoover Reservoir Lake in Westerville for our location. As you can see, he is still just as handsome as ever, even after all these years.

Commercial Pet Photography - Columbus, Ohio, Magazine Shoot by Holly Hildreth

I absolutely LOVE working on commercial pet photography projects for clients. I recently had a fun project come up for Dogster Magazine that involved photographing some Afghan hounds for the cover of their June/July 2022 issue. Afghan hounds aren’t exactly dogs you see walking through your neighborhood every day, so I was super lucky to find two incredible dogs from Solina Hounds in Alexandria, Ohio. Owner Sophia graciously brought her Afghan Hounds, Inca and Genny, to me for their glamour shots. We wanted to have a true beauty magazine cover look complete with a fan to blow out those luscious locks. These two gorgeous ladies did not disappoint. Both models were so friendly, happy, and easy to work with that it made my job easy! Below is the final cover for Dogster, a small sampling of some of my favorite shots from this session, and a behind-the-scenes look at my set-up.

Westerville, Ohio, Pet Photography Session - Lola the Cocker Spaniel by Holly Hildreth

Lola came to me for a session when her owner received a pet photography gift certificate for Mother’s Day. This sweet senior Cocker lady is blind, but that doesn’t slow her down. She was super outgoing and loving, and your best friend if you gave her cuddles and booty scratches. It just goes to show that even if your pet has an impairment, we can still get amazing photos during your shoot. Lola’s owner even brought along a little flower crown for her session, which was the perfect finishing touch for this queen.
