The Power of a Photo: How Rescue Dog Photography Helps Pets Find Homes

🎉 Huge congratulations to sweet Anita on finding her forever home through Stop the Suffering Animal Rescue of Ohio! Anita’s new family saw the heartwarming photos I took of her and instantly fell in love with her irresistible smile—and the rest is history. 💕 It’s moments like these that remind me why I’m so passionate about giving back to the Columbus rescue dog community.

Anita’s Original Photo

The Transformative Power of a Great Photo

When Anita first arrived at the rescue, she was just another pup in need of a second chance. Her original intake photo, didn’t capture her personality or her beauty. Photos are so critical in helping dogs get adopted, so a photo like this isn’t likely to catch potential adopters’ eyes because you can’t get a sense of who the dog is.

New Photo

As soon as Anita had her professional dog photography session with me, everything changed. A high-quality, well-lit, and engaging photo allowed potential adopters to see her as more than just another rescue dog—it showed her as a sweet and happy companion full of potential. The adopters said they instantly fell in love with her smile in the photos and knew that she was meant to be theirs. After months with no interest, her new family adopted her just days after her new photos were updated. That’s the amazing power that photography can have in changing a rescue dog’s story

📸 Did you know? According to research from the University of Richmond, 90% of adopters reported looking at photos online when considering adoption, and 64% said good photos were a critical factor in their decision to adopt. That means a great photo doesn’t just make a dog look good—it can literally be life-changing.

Why Professional Dog Photography Matters

Rescue organizations work tirelessly to find homes for dogs in need, but first impressions matter. Some shelter dogs come from difficult backgrounds, and their intake photos often reflect the stress of a new environment. A professional pet photographer knows how to bring out their best features, highlight their personalities, and create images that spark an emotional connection with potential adopters.

Some of the key benefits of professional foster dog photography include:

Fine art dog photography of a white and brown rescue dog in a moody living room scene with fireplace
  • Increased Adoption Rates – Eye-catching, high-quality photos generate more interest and engagement from potential adopters. In fact a study found that dogs that had poor-quality photos took 3 times longer to get adopted than those that have a great photo. Even an average quality photo (while still helping the dog get adopted) still took 2.5x longer to get adopted than those that had a great-quality image.

  • Emotional Connection – People are more likely to adopt when they can envision a pet as part of their family. Seeing dogs in cages or looking stressed doesn’t strike an emotional connection with adopters. Seeing a heart-melting smile, gorgeous fur, and sparkling eyes is a sure-fire way to elicit emotion and tell the viewer more about not only the dog’s physical characteristics, but also their personality.

  • Better Representation – Professional pet portraits showcase a dog’s true character, rather than just their circumstances. No matter how nice a shelter facility may be, it is still a very stressful environment for every dog. By removing them from the shelter and doing their photo shoot in the studio, I’m able to give dogs the quiet, calm, happy space that dogs need to come out of their shell and let their personality shine.

Capturing Rare Dog Breeds: A Hungarian Mudi Photo Shoot in Columbus, Ohio

Stunning professional pet photo shoot of a rare dog breed called the Hungarian Mudi, in a field of yellow wildflowers in Columbus, Ohio

One of the things I love most about being a professional pet photographer in Columbus, Ohio, is the incredible opportunity to meet and capture stunning images of some of the most unique and rare dog breeds in the world. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Ginko, a beautiful Hungarian Mudi! For those unfamiliar with the breed, the Hungarian Mudi is a truly remarkable dog. Originally bred as herding dogs in Hungary, they’re known for their intelligence, agility, and versatility. These energetic dogs are always eager to work and learn, excelling in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding competitions.

The Mudi’s striking appearance makes them a dream to photograph. Their coats can range from wavy to curly, and they come in a variety of colors, from solid black to unique merle patterns. While they may be relatively small in size, their big personalities (and even bigger voices) make them stand out. As a pet photographer, it’s an absolute joy to capture their playful and energetic spirit through my lens. Mudis are incredibly loyal, loving, and bond closely with their owners, which always shines through in their portraits.

What makes the Hungarian Mudi even more special is how rare they are—only about 450 of these incredible dogs are living in the United States. Each encounter with one feels like a special treat, and believe it or not, I’ve had the privilege of photographing several Mudis here in Columbus! I guess you could say I’m a Mudi magnet! Whether you have a rare breed like the Mudi or a beloved mixed breed, capturing the essence of your pet’s personality is what I strive for in every photo session.

Travel and Destination Pet Photography: Iowa Waterfall Corgi Photo Shoot by Holly Hildreth

Destination pet photography session of two corgi dogs at Dunning's Springs waterfall in Decorah, Iowa

If there’s one thing I love almost as much at pet photography it’s traveling! This summer my travels brought me to northeastern Iowa to visit family. I am originally from Iowa, but now that I live 11 hours away in Ohio, I don’t get back there very often. When I do, it’s for Christmas. So this was the first time in 10 years that I was in Iowa in the summer! So of course I needed to hit all my favorite places while we were there, which included Dunning’s Spring in Decorah, Iowa.

Dunning’s Spring originates in a cave that has ice on the walls year round, which means the chilly water flowing out was so cold that it was steaming from the temperature difference with the air. This made for some nice foggy effects in the photos.

Dunning’s Spring is a magical spot for destination pet photography. Despite the water's super cold temperature, that didn't stop either of the dogs from taking a dip. I’m pretty sure they would have both happily sat in the waterfall all day long if they could.

Our photo shoot didn’t stop at the waterfall. We hiked to the top of the ice cave and took in the stunning views, all while I captured the dogs exploring the outdoors. What I love about Dunning’s Spring is that it feels like a hidden gem—this waterfall looks like it belongs in the mountains, not in the heartland of Iowa! It’s the perfect backdrop for an adventure pet photography session that blends travel and natural beauty.

I have fond memories of my parents bringing me to Dunning’s Spring to play in the waterfall and then we would head over to the fish hatchery for a picnic lunch and eagle-watching. We decided do just that for old time’s sake during our visit, and my two corgis got to come along!

For me, the best part of traveling with pets is sharing these special moments. Rigby, my blind corgi, was thrilled to be on an adventure. Even though he couldn’t see the waterfall, he could sense the excitement in the air and the cool water on his paws.

I’m so happy to have these beautiful waterfall portraits of my dogs in such a special and meaningful place.

Travel and destination pet photography offers a unique opportunity to capture your furry companion in stunning, scenic locations. Whether it’s a stunning waterfall or a special location that is meaningful to you, these sessions allow you and your pet to explore while we create beautiful, lasting memories. Perfect for adventurous pets and their owners, destination shoots combine travel with the joy of professional pet portraits, ensuring you come away with extraordinary images of your pet in some of the world's most picturesque settings.

Dog Birthday Party Photography - By Ohio's Premiere Pet Photographer Holly Hildreth by Holly Hildreth

I have a tradition of doing birthday photos every year of my own dogs on their birthday to celebrate. I try to make the theme different every year, and also use it as an opportunity to get a little creative! Today I wanted to share with you my youngest corgi Brisket’s birthday photos. Brisket turned 3 this year, and you may not know this, but he’s not actually a dog—he’s really 3 possums stacked on top of each other in a trench coat…inside a corgi’s body.

This year I went with a color explosion for the party theme. I wanted a vibrant color pallet, reminiscent of Lisa Frank’s style for my puppy’s 3rd birthday party.

Of course I can’t just share this year’s photos without also including his last 2 birthdays as well. For his 1st and 2nd birthdays, I wanted to go with something simple, since he was still very much a puppy and not interested in modeling for me. Now that he’s older he is obsessed with getting his picture taken.

Ohio Commercial Pet Photography Shoot - Beer Can Label for Columbus Brewery by Holly Hildreth

For the past few years, I have been fortunate to be a part of super a unique and popular fundraiser contest in support of RESCUEDohio, a Columbus, Ohio-based dog rescue organization I volunteer with. For this contest, people submitted pictures of their dogs and got friends and family to “vote” for them for the chance to be the new face of 3 Seventh Son Brewing beer cans! Each “vote” was a $1 donation to RescuedOhio. Through this contest we raised over $37.5k for RescuedOhio!!! These funds will go to helping provide medical treatment, housing and supplies, and adoption services to homeless, abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and puppies here in Central Ohio.

After the contest ended, I photographed the top 3 winning dogs for their beer label. I just love how these turned out. Take a look at how good Georgie, Winry, and Buddy look on the cans! We went with bold, primary colors, as they look super eye-catching when in a 6-pack.

To celebrate the release, Seventh Son Brewing threw a release party. To build excitement and get the word out, I did a photo shoot with the 4th place winner at the brewery. We used these photos across social media to help bring awareness to our campaign.

Commercial Dog Photography - Parachute Home National Dog Day Campaign by Holly Hildreth

Commercial pet photography product in use shot showing a dog lounging in a white chair

One of the things that has helped me develop my photographic style as a pet photographer, is my background in commercial photography! Any time I am able to combine commercial lighting and styling with photographing pets—I’m in heaven. So when Parachute Home reached out and asked me if I would join them again this year for their annual Puppy Party on National Dog Dog at their new Easton location, I was so excited! We had a great turn out, and created some beautiful product photos featuring our puppy party guests for Parachute’s campaign.

Did you miss the party this year? There’s always next year! Parachute Home loves celebrating National Dog Day by throwing a party just for you to come shop with your best friend, enjoy some local treats and drinks, and get your very own FREE pet portrait! Hope to see you next year!
